These Swedish Meatballs are the ultimate comfort food—tender, juicy meatballs smothered in a rich, creamy gravy and served over buttery mashed potatoes or egg noodles. Whether you’re channeling your inner IKEA vibes or simply craving something hearty, this classic dish is a family favorite for a reason.

Swedish Meatballs – Creamy, Cozy, and Comforting
🍽 Ingredients (Servings: 4–6)

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ lb ground pork
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely minced
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ¼ teaspoon ground allspice
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for frying)

For the Cream Sauce:

  • ¼ cup butter
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • ¾ cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

👨‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Meatball Mixture:
🥣 In a large bowl, combine ground beef, pork, breadcrumbs, onion, egg, milk, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined—don’t overwork it.

2️⃣ Form and Fry:
🥄 Shape mixture into 1-inch meatballs. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat and cook meatballs in batches, browning on all sides. Remove and set aside (they’ll finish cooking in the sauce).

3️⃣ Make the Sauce:
🧈 In the same skillet, melt butter and whisk in flour to form a roux. Slowly whisk in beef broth until smooth. Add cream, Worcestershire, mustard, salt, and pepper. Simmer until thickened, about 5–7 minutes.

4️⃣ Simmer the Meatballs:
🍲 Return meatballs to the skillet and simmer in the sauce for 10–12 minutes, or until fully cooked and tender.

5️⃣ Serve and Garnish:
🍽 Spoon over mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, or rice. Garnish with chopped parsley or a dollop of lingonberry jam for authentic flair.

💡 Helpful Tip

For ultra-tender meatballs, don’t overmix the meat and use fresh breadcrumbs soaked in milk. And yes, lingonberry jam on the side really does balance the richness perfectly.
