French Onion Soup Burger Bliss
Ingredients (Servings: 4)
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or ½ teaspoon dried)
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)
  • 4 slices Gruyère cheese (or Swiss if preferred)
  • 4 brioche buns, toasted
  • Optional garnish: fresh parsley or chives

👨‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Caramelize the Onions:
In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter with olive oil. Add sliced onions, thyme, and a pinch of salt. Cook slowly, stirring often, for 25–30 minutes until onions turn deep golden brown.

2️⃣ Deglaze the Pan:
Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up the browned bits from the pan. Simmer until most of the liquid has evaporated, leaving the onions jammy and flavorful. Set aside.

3️⃣ Form the Patties:
Shape ground beef into 4 even patties, slightly larger than your buns since they’ll shrink while cooking. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.

4️⃣ Cook the Burgers:
Heat a skillet or grill to medium-high. Cook patties 3–4 minutes per side for medium, topping each with Gruyère cheese during the last minute so it melts beautifully.

5️⃣ Assemble the Burgers:
Spread caramelized onions generously on the bottom half of each toasted brioche bun. Place the cheesy burger patty on top, then spoon more onions over. Cap with the bun top and serve hot.

💡 Helpful Tip: To get onions perfectly caramelized, cook them low and slow. Rushing this step will make them bitter instead of sweet and jammy.
